ASSOCIATE at CAMBRIDGE INNOVATION CENTER
Cambridge Innovation Center is looking for a full-time, entry-level Associate to join our team. This is a great opportunity for someone with at least one year of professional work experience.
ABOUT CIC
Neighboring the MIT campus and steps away from the Red Line in Kendall Square, Cambridge Innovation Center is the World’s largest flexible office facility for growing companies. CIC provides approximately 350 small companies award-wining facilities and state-of-the-art business and technical services.
CIC is a leader in workplace design, having won several awards in this area. We have re-envisioned the concept of “workplace,” seeking to create a fun, enjoyable, campus-like environment that provides many opportunities to meet and mix with other innovators.
CIC offers our clients a range of environments from large, shared co-working areas to private, secured offices, all with access to extensive shared amenities, including fully stocked kitchens, conference rooms, copiers and printers, shower rooms, massage therapy, bike-share program, etc. Our goal is to let our clients focus on their innovations while we take care of everything else.
CIC seeks to provide a warm, friendly environment where everything “just works” all the time. This requires a staff with good interpersonal skills and a high level of organization and attention to detail. In this way, CIC resembles a high-end hotel. Unlike a hotel, however, the companies at CIC usually stay with us for years, and our staff and clients develop relationships that transcend the service industry norm. The feel here is that of a “close-knit neighborhood,” where CIC staff are community leaders.
CIC has attracted some of the best-known startups in the Boston area, including half of the Google team that built the Android smart-phone operating system, Design that Matters, which was awarded Time Magazine’s Best Invention of 2010, and InVivo Therapeutics, a company working to cure paralysis. Since 2001, CIC client companies have raised over $1B in venture capital. Interested candidates may wish to watch the short videos at http://www.cictr.com.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
CIC seeks highly capable, self-directed individuals who employ a high level of autonomy in their work. If you are the kind of person who not only thinks critically about problems, but also likes to take the initiative to pursue new ideas, you would probably enjoy working here. This is a job for a balanced, self-confident individual.
At CIC your work performance is evaluated in several ways. Teams are evaluated based on how well they achieve high client satisfaction, while individuals receive peer reviews that assess your contributions to the team.
The ideal candidate will
– desire to learn all aspects of our business from the ground up
– be personable, happy to help, and calm regardless of the surrounding environment
– possess the ability to juggle many tasks and pay close attention to detail
– have solid time management skills and be organized
– take ownership and responsibility for tasks at hand and lead them to completion
– be a true team player with the capacity to foster and maintain positive working relationships with clients, colleagues, building management, and vendors
– bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to everything he or she does
You should be able to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing. You should also be able to work comfortably with everyone, from cleaning crews to CEOs, treating everyone as your equal. You should be effective interacting frequently with team members without much direct supervision.
We don’t expect you to know all of these things already. We will train you, and so the ideal candidate also needs to learn quickly, work well with people, and bring an attitude of focused dedication, a drive to get things right, and a passion for supporting innovators and entrepreneurs.
GENERAL OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES
CIC is divided into three independent operating units, known as “Communities.” As a new Associate, you will become a member of one of these communities.
Associates are the “professionals” at CIC. A separate team of part-time employees takes care of daily, repetitive tasks, such as stocking our kitchens with food, sorting mail, and loading printers with paper. As part of the professional team at CIC, your work will primarily include
– Developing relationships with CIC clients, making sure they are happy and have what they need
– Creatively finding ways to meet a very broad range of needs CIC clients may have, including directly performing a very broad range of tasks. For example, client may ask, “Can I get some extra furniture and help rearranging my office,” “How do I send a package to Uganda,” “Can I host a 50-person event in CIC,” “Why doesn’t my internet connection work,” “How do I set up a video conference to Japan,” or “Can you install a whiteboard on the wall of my office?”
– CIC’s service model is to maximize the percentage of the time that our client service team members can respond immediately and personally when a request is made. As such, you will be able to answer just about any request that comes your way, and you will be given the tools (sometimes literally) to make happen whatever they need.
– In addition to responding to requests, you will be responsible for ensuring that regular systems maintained by CIC’s part-timers are operating smoothly, e.g. did the kitchen stockers replenish the herbal tea supply? Are the conference rooms looking good?
– As frontline support, you will also arrange for new services for clients, including adding new client employees to our computer systems, getting them keys to their new office, etc.
– You will assist more senior team members with special projects. For example, we may want to analyze coffee consumption and evaluate new coffee vendors, or develop a new set of navigational signs for the center to make it easier for guests to find their way around.
– You will also assist clients should they move from one office to another, and you may work alongside part-timers to move desks and file cabinets. You may also set up a conference room for a client presentation.
